ASEAN Engineering Inspectorate for Manufacturing & Mechanical (AEI-MM)

Introduction

The ASEAN Engineering Inspectorate for Manufacturing & Mechanical (AEI-MM) is a regional professional platform established to advance engineering inspection, competency development, and standards harmonisation for the manufacturing and mechanical engineering sectors across ASEAN. Operating under the framework of the ASEAN Engineering Register (AER) and supported by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO), AEI-MM plays an important role in strengthening regional collaboration among engineering professionals, institutions, and industries.

The initiative was formally established during the AFEO Mid-Term Meeting on 7 August 2020, with a pro-tem committee comprising representatives from ASEAN engineering organisations including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and the Philippines. The founding chairman is Ir. Prof. Dr Tan Chee Fai from the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). The establishment of AEI-MM reflects ASEAN’s commitment to enhancing engineering professionalism and supporting the region’s transition toward Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing ecosystems.

AEI-MM focuses on promoting engineering inspection competency, professional certification, knowledge exchange, and international mobility of engineering professionals within ASEAN. The inspectorate works to review and identify gaps in manufacturing standards and regulations among member countries, while facilitating the harmonisation of engineering practices and regulatory frameworks.

In the long term, AEI-MM aims to develop training and certification programmes for engineers, engineering technologists, engineering technicians, and contractors, while supporting the development of ASEAN smart manufacturing standards and mutual recognition mechanisms. Through these initiatives, AEI-MM contributes to strengthening ASEAN’s industrial capability, fostering innovation in manufacturing technologies, and supporting sustainable industrial development across the region.
