< Previous26 PERSATUAN INSINYUR INDONESIA PII AFEO MEMBERS THE BEGINNING27 WWW.PII.OR.ID The Institution of Engineers, Indonesia (Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia - PII) began on May 23, 1952 when Ir. H. Djoeanda Kartawidjaja and Prof. Ir. R. Roosseno Soerjohadikoesoemo – on appointment from the President of the Republic of Indonesia Ir. Soekarno – founded the the Institution of Engineers, Indonesia with their fellow Indonesian engineers in the West Hall, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia Bandung (now ITB) on Jl. Ganesha 10, Bandung. At that time, the number of Indonesian engineers was only about 75 people, while the responsibilities that had to be borne were very large. For this reason, it was agreed to form the Institution of Engineers, Indonesia (PII) which consolidated engineers so that they can become a significant force in building Indonesia. PII is the second oldest professional organisation in Indonesia, after the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI). From 1957 to 1964, it also played an important and strategic role in the establishment of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology Surabaya (ITS) and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FT-UI). In 1997, PII cooperated with the Institute of Engineers Australia (IEAust) to establish the grade of Indonesia Professional Engineers to be of equal recognition to the Professional Engineer Certification (P.Eng/PE) in APEC, and ASEAN in 2003. PII was further strengthened by the presence of Law No. 11 of 2014 concerning engineering which was later equipped with Government Regulation PP No. 25 of 2019. As of 2020, PII has 23 Vocational Bodies, with more than 33,000 members, 15,000 Professional Engineers (IPM/ IPU) and 5,403 Associate Professional Engineers (IPP) of international equivalent, 500 Engineers registered with the AER and 1200+ Indonesian Engineers registered as ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers (ACPE). Operating under the principle of voluntarism and democracy, VUSTA is the biggest nation-wide network of non-governmental science and technology organisations, with members from 90 national professional associations, 63 provincial unions in every province and more than 600 affiliated science and technology institutes/centers working in diversified fields from natural sciences, social sciences, technology and engineering. With the function of gathering and uniting Vietnamese intellectuals, both domestically and overseas; coordinating and guiding its member organisations’ operations; and representing the voices of members, VUSTA has made significant contributions to the popularization of science and technology to the general public, to the promotion of scientific research and innovations, to provide effective consultancy to the important policies, programs and laws of the Government, contributing to the sustainable development of the country. VUSTA is a member of many international and regional science, technology and engineering organisations such as the International Science Council (ISC), the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). It maintains cooperative relations with international cooperation agencies, international non-governmental organisations, diplomatic corps and other counterparts concern the development of Viet Nam. VUSTA and AFEO • Since 1998, VUSTA, representing the Vietnamese science and technology community, have activated full membership and have become a proactive and responsible AFEO member. • In 2000, VUSTA hosted the CAFEO18, themed as “Technical cooperation in ASEAN for Development in the New Millennium” in Ha Noi for the first time and the first group of 19 Vietnamese engineers were presented with the ASEAN professional engineering recognition. • In 2006, Vietnam’s ASEAN Professional Engineers Registration Council (VAERC) was officially launched and 322 Vietnamese engineers in various disciplines have been successfully registered by 2021. This is, indeed, the conducive channel to enable technical exchange amongst Vietnamese engineers and engineering community in the region. • 8 years later, VUSTA, again, held the AFEO Mid-term Conference in Ha Noi in 2008. • In 2010, VUSTA continued to host the CAFEO28 with the theme “Technology and Technology for a Better Quality of Life in the Face of the Challenge of Climate Change”. CAFEO28, was praised with warmest recognition, appreciation and imprints from the participants. • In 2016, VUSTA for the second time hosted the AFEO Mid-term Conference and 15 Vietnamese engineers were recognised as the AER members then. • Recently, in 2020, the hybrid CAFEO38, themed as “Fostering Initiatives and Actions by AFEO to build a Sustainable and Prosperous ASEAN Community”, was hosted and led by the VUSTA with over 1,000 participants coming from 18 countries and territories. This important event has become a shining activity as Vietnam assuming the role of ASEAN Chair 2020. During CAFEO38, 116 Vietnamese engineers were proudly presented with AER certificates and medals. • VUSTA’s proactive and responsible AFEO membership have constantly enabled Vietnamese scientific, technological, technical and engineering intellectuals and engineers to full regional integration and realizing the national diplomatic policy views of “Actively participating in and promoting its role in multilateral mechanisms, especially ASEAN and the United Nations” as well as contributing to affirming Vietnam’s strong commitment in building the ASEAN people-centered Community.
