It has been 40 years of activities since the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations was officially formalised in 1982. The warmth of friendship while working together has now been archived in this book to be a part of our history. First proposed during CAFEO 36 in Singapore, it is hoped that this book will capture all the great memories of working, learning and growing together within ASEAN. The editorial team spent countless hours, passionately researching, interviewing, sifting through old photos, writing, and rewriting this book, to record the history of AFEO. AFEO has been the backbone that has brought together the engineering organisations of ASEAN countries. It has provided the platform for us to share engineering expertise and help each other to develop our nations, work closer together and to share and enjoy our traditional cultures. We have been working together to create engineering standards for ASEAN, and it is hoped that soon we will have the ASEAN standards for various engineering activities to be used by all AFEO member countries, in the hope to facilitate mobility within our region. The AFEO family is now getting bigger as we include Engineering Technologists and Engineering Technicians in addition to Engineers. Serving AFEO in the past as the Malaysian Country Registrar and the Head Commissioner of the ASEAN Engineers Register (AER), I have met with many delegates from AFEO member countries in the many events I have attended throughout the years, and I see that all of us are proud of our profession and that we hope to work together as friends and partners moving forward together, to create wealth within the region, increase engineering education quality whilst maintaining safety issues and the sustainability of our resources. I hope that we will continue to support each other and be relevant in the next 40 years, and beyond. Let’s celebrate AFEO’s 40th Anniversary, 1st August 2022. Ir. Prof. Dr. Norlida Buniyamin Editorial Team Advisor Commemorative AFEO Coffee Table Book FOREWORD BY EDITORIAL TEAM ADVISOR AFEO — OVERSEEING THE ENGINEERING FRATERNITY4 EDITOR’S NOTE We are deeply honoured to be part of this remarkable editorial team that took up the challenge to put together this Commemorative AFEO Coffee Table E-Book (CACTEB). It took a regional effort to produce this historical memento that brings together 40 years of recollections and memories that bind the ASEAN engineering communities. Engineering professionals are the nation builders of our respective countries. We have been working together through our regional networks, helping each other to engineer ASEAN to what it is today. It is without any doubt a great challenge to reconstruct 40 years’ worth of history, piecing together stories and old photographs while trying to maintain information accuracy. This book will eventually be a reference document for generations to come. Winston Churchill once said that “History is written by victors.” We do not want this to be the case. We want the CACTEB to be THE chronicle of AFEO. The challenges of keeping it real are multiplied by a large integer of complexities due to this pandemic. Nevertheless, CACTEB is now a reality due to the contribution of this great team that we have assembled from all AFEO member countries. On behalf of the editorial team, which is represented by all member countries, we wish AFEO continued success and may engineering professions in ASEAN continue to be respectful, advancing and prospering to greater heights.
